Onam: Kerala's Harvest Festival of Flowers, Feasts and Boat Races
By the Hindi Haveli team · October 28, 2026
In late summer, the state of Kerala, on India's southwestern coast, puts on one of the country's most beautiful festivals. Front yards bloom with circles of flower petals, families sit down to a feast served on banana leaves, and long, narrow boats race down the backwaters to the beat of rowing songs. This is Onam, Kerala's harvest festival, and it is celebrated by people of every faith in the state.
Onam belongs to the Malayalam-speaking world, not the Hindi-speaking one. But Hindi learners love it, because it shows how varied India is, and because talking about Onam is a wonderful way to practice everyday Hindi words for flowers, food, boats and kings. This guide explains the festival and gives you those words.
When is Onam?
Onam falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam, which usually overlaps August and September. The celebrations last up to ten days, beginning with a day called Atham and ending with the main day, Thiruvonam. In 2027, Thiruvonam is expected in mid-September; check a Kerala calendar for the exact date in your year.
For many families from Kerala living in the US, the Gulf, the UK or elsewhere, Onam is also the time for big community gatherings, often on a weekend near the main day.
The story of King Mahabali
The heart of Onam is the story of Mahabali, a kind and generous king who ruled Kerala long ago. Under his rule, the story says, there was no hunger, no lying and no unfairness, and everyone was equal. His goodness made him so powerful that the gods grew worried.
Lord Vishnu came to him in the form of a small boy named Vamana and asked for just three steps of land. Mahabali, always generous, agreed. Then Vamana grew enormous. With one step he covered the earth, with the second the heavens, and with nowhere left to put the third, Mahabali offered his own head. Vamana pushed him down to the underworld, but, moved by the king's goodness, granted him one wish: to visit his people once a year.
Onam is that visit. Families clean their homes, make flower carpets and cook a feast so that the beloved king will find his people happy and well.
Story words
- राजा (raajaa): king
- प्रजा (prajaa): the people of a kingdom, subjects
- दयालु (dayaalu): kind, compassionate
- बराबर (baraabar): equal
- कदम (kadam): a step
The flower carpet
The best-known image of Onam is the pookalam, a circular design made of flower petals on the ground at the entrance of a home. Pookalam is a Malayalam word. On the first day, it might be a single small ring of yellow flowers. Each day, families add a new ring and new colors, so by Thiruvonam it can be a large, dazzling mandala of marigold, chrysanthemum, hibiscus and leaves.
Children often help gather and sort the petals, and schools, offices and neighborhoods hold pookalam competitions.
Flower words
- फूल (phool): flower
- पंखुड़ी (pankhuRee): a petal
- गेंदा (gendaa): marigold
- गोल (gol): round
- रंग-बिरंगा (rang-birangaa): colorful, many-colored
Notice रंग-बिरंगा (rang-birangaa), colorful. Hindi loves these rhyming pairs, where a word is paired with a sound-alike to make it richer. You will meet many of them: चाय-वाय (chaay-vaay), "tea and such," or खाना-पीना (khaanaa-peenaa), "food and drink."
The great feast
On Thiruvonam, families sit down to the Onam sadya, a vegetarian feast of many dishes served on a banana leaf. A full sadya can have more than twenty items: rice, sambar, avial (vegetables in coconut and yogurt), thoran (a dry vegetable dish with coconut), olan, pickles, banana chips, papadam and buttermilk. It ends with payasam, a sweet pudding often made with rice or lentils, milk or coconut milk, and jaggery.
There is even an order for where each dish goes on the leaf, and a correct way to fold the leaf afterward to show you enjoyed the meal.
Feast words
- केले का पत्ता (kele kaa pattaa): a banana leaf
- दावत (daavat): a feast
- चावल (chaaval): rice
- नारियल (naariyal): coconut
- अचार (achaar): pickle
- खीर (kheer): a sweet rice pudding, the North Indian cousin of payasam
Fun to notice: eating with your right hand from a banana leaf is common across South India. The leaf is clean, natural, and adds a subtle flavor to hot food. In Hindi, you might hear हाथ से खाना (haath se khaanaa), "to eat with your hand."
The snake boat races
Onam season brings Kerala's famous boat races. Long wooden boats called chundan vallam, or snake boats, can be over 100 feet long and carry around a hundred rowers. Teams from different villages race on rivers and lakes, rowing in perfect time while singers keep the rhythm. Crowds line the banks, cheering and singing along.
On the water
- नाव (naav): boat
- नदी (nadee): river
- झील (jheel): lake
- दौड़ (dauR): race, running
- जीत (jeet): victory, a win
Other Onam traditions
- Dance: Women perform thiruvathirakali, a graceful circle dance, often in cream-and-gold Kerala saris called kasavu.
- Tiger dance: In Thrissur, performers paint their bodies like tigers and dance through the streets in a celebration called pulikali.
- New clothes: Elders give new clothes, called onakodi, to family members.
- Swings: Families hang swings from trees, and children and young women swing and sing.
Onam in the wider world
Large Malayali communities in the Gulf countries, the US, the UK, Canada and Australia celebrate Onam with community sadyas, pookalam contests and cultural shows. If a friend invites you to an Onam sadya, say yes. You will eat beautifully, and you will see how one region keeps its traditions alive far from home.
How to wish someone a happy Onam
The Malayalam greeting is Onashamsakal, and many people simply say "Happy Onam." In Hindi, you can say:
Greetings
- ओणम की शुभकामनाएँ (onam kee shubhkaamnaaen): Best wishes for Onam
- ओणम मुबारक (onam mubaarak): Happy Onam
- आपका त्योहार शुभ हो (aapkaa tyohaar shubh ho): May your festival be joyful
Talk about Onam in simple Hindi
Here are three easy sentences you can say with your child:
- यह फूल पीला है। (yah phool peelaa hai.): This flower is yellow.
- नाव बहुत लंबी है। (naav bahut lambee hai.): The boat is very long.
- राजा दयालु था। (raajaa dayaalu thaa.): The king was kind.
The last sentence uses था (thaa), "was," the past form of है (hai), "is." Swap them back and forth with your child: राजा दयालु है, राजा दयालु था. It is a gentle first step into Hindi tenses.
